The History of Tattoos

A tattoo is a form of body modification where a design is made by inserting inks, dyes, and pigments, either permanent or temporary, into the dermis layer of the skin to change its pigment. Originating from the Polynesian term ‘tatau’, which translates to ‘mark something’, tattoos have a rich and deep-seated history, dating back as far back as 5000 BCE. Initially, tattoos carried various meanings from different civilizations, with practices ranging from spiritual rites, marks of status and rank, to decorations for bravery, sexual lures, and marks of fertility. In the USA, the cultural approach to tattoos has oscillated dramatically over the course of history. Native American tribes used tattoos for ceremonial purposes, identification, and healing. Through the 18th and 19th century, tattoos evolved into a mark of deviance and carnival attractions. However, the late 20th century saw a resurgence and normalization of tattoos as a form of self-expression and art. In the contemporary USA, tattoos have transcended the barriers of stereotypes and are embraced by diverse age, ethnic and socio-economic brackets, including urban professionals. The trends in tattoo designs in the USA have steadily diversified as well, governed largely by personal tastes, fashion trends and cultural and societal shifts. In the early 21st century, a trend of ‘minimalistic tattoos’ and ‘watercolor tattoos’ is burgeoning, characterized by smaller designs and vibrant colors. However, traditional styles such as tribal, Old School, and Japanese remain perpetually popular. Despite incessant evolution in style, symbolism, and acceptance, tattoos remain a profound cultural and personal statement. Yet, it continues to invite dichotomous opinions depending on cultural, religious, societal norms and personal beliefs.
