The History of Fantasy Tattoos
A fantasy tattoo refers to body art typically featuring imaginative or unreal designs often inspired by literature, art, and pop culture. Originating from the countercultural movements of the 60s in the USA, they’ve transcended to mainstream popularity over the years. Associated with Freedom and self-expression, they incorporate mythical creatures, celestial bodies, fairy tales, and other enchanting elements. Fantasy tattoos reflect the influence of diverse cultural references including Celtic, Native American, and Japanese folklore among others. Today, with the emergence of hyper-realistic tattoo trends, fantasy tattoos offer endless possibilities, uniting unique personal narratives with universal symbols.

Award Winning Austin, TX tattoo artist
I am Mike Metaxa, have been tattooing for over 20 years, living and working in Israel, Greece, and now the US.
I enjoy working in so many different styles. As far as a favorite, I don’t think I can say that I prefer one style over the rest. During the course of the same day, I could be doing a traditional tattoo followed up by a fantasy piece. With years of experience, I’d acquired a good knowledge of tattoo history and an understanding of various styles of tattooing. That allows me to blur borders between styles, which in turn, results in pieces that are as distinctive and unique as the personality of their owners.
